This is a stretch of water called Tarn Howes, near Coniston, in the Lake District. I actually painted this on the spot, depicting trees that were growing on a spit of land that jutted out into the lake. My van was not too far away, but I had to struggle with this rather large canvass, approximately two by three feet, with my easel and paint box, across twenty feet or so of very boggy ground! I was younger then and did some daft things! Spent the evening scraping off bits of grass, some pine needles, green fly and other wee critters off the surface of the painting, and touching it up!
